For immediate release:

Philadelphia - Philadelphia International Medicine (PIM) hospitals and physicians ranked among the best in the United States in the annual "Best Hospitals" edition of U.S. News & World Reports, and for the second consecutive year, The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia was ranked the Number One pediatric hospital in the country. The University of Pennsylvania Medical Center was named to the Honor Roll of the nation's best overall hospitals for the eighth consecutive year.

"Philadelphia International Medicine is very proud that both The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center (HUP) were recognized by their peers and by U.S. News & World Reports as being among the very best medical organizations in the world," said Andrew Wigglesworth, president and CEO of Philadelphia International Medicine. "While we compliment CHOP and HUP, we also want to acknowledge all the PIM hospitals. At least one PIM hospital was rated among the best in every category, and in rehabilitation, PIM placed five hospitals among the top 25 - a considerable achievement." MossRehab was named for the 11th consecutive year in rehabilitation.

Of significance to the rankings for patients is that only through PIM can one telephone call put you in touch with so many of the top hospitals in the United States. In most U.S. News categories, several PIM hospitals were rated among the best. For instance, both Fox Chase Cancer Center and HUP were named in Cancer; HUP and Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Digestive Disorders; HUP and Jefferson in Ear, Nose and Throat; HUP in Eyes; HUP and Jefferson in Geriatrics; HUP and Jefferson in Gynecology; HUP and Jefferson in Heart and Heart Surgery; HUP in Endocrinology; HUP and Temple University Hospital in Nephrology; HUP and Jefferson in Neurology and Neurosurgery; Jefferson in Orthopedics; CHOP in Pediatrics; HUP in Psychiatry; Jefferson, MossRehab, Magee Rehabilitation Hospital, Temple University Hospital and HUP in Rehabiliation; HUP in Respiratory Disorders; HUP in Rheumatology and HUP and Jefferson in Urology.

"This designation recognizes important and cutting-edge work that goes on at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia every day," says Steven M. Altschuler, MD, president and chief executive officer of The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. "We feel a tremendous responsibility and sense of urgency to continue to push the boundaries of pediatric medicine in our quest to end childhood disease."

The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia was also named the number one children's hospital in comprehensive, data-based studies conducted by Child magazine. Children's Hospital was also recently awarded Magnet Status, the nursing profession's highest national recognition by the American Nursing Credentialing Center.

"We are pleased that the clinical excellence of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania is recognized by its inclusion -- for the eighth consecutive year -- in the select 'Honor Roll' category of America's best hospitals," said Ralph W. Muller, Chief Executive Officer of the University of Pennsylvania Health System. "This honor reflects the extraordinary efforts of the talented doctors, nurses, and other dedicated staff who continue to provide high quality care at HUP, the nation's first teaching hospital. These same professionals also help advance patient care in America as a result of their pioneering and progressive initiatives in biomedical research."
