Philadelphia International Medicine Wins 2003 Governor's Export Excellence Award in Services

Philadelphia - Philadelphia International Medicine® (PIM) received the 2003 Pennsylvania Governor's Export Excellence Award as the top export company in the service sector. The award was presented Sept. 29 at a ceremony at the Governor's Residence in Harrisburg.

Governor Edward G. Rendell noted the special nature of Philadelphia International Medicine in his remarks, saying the company was an example of a Pennsylvania success story. The governor recalled how the company was formed as a joint venture by the leading hospitals in the Philadelphia region during his tenure as mayor of the city of Philadelphia. He said that PIM harnessed the considerable healthcare knowledge in the Philadelphia region, and markets that knowledge worldwide.

In accepting the award, Andrew Wigglesworth, president and CEO of Philadelphia International Medicine, said that the PIM's role is made easier because "the hospitals, physicians, nurses and other health care practitioners in the Philadelphia region are among the best in the world." In terms of training and education, he said one of every five physicians in the United States trains in Philadelphia at some point in their career.

Philadelphia International Medicine was formed by the hospitals in the Philadelphia area to serve as a one-stop shot for international healthcare practitioners needing continuing medical education, advanced training, business administration skills, management expertise, second opinions, tele-clinics and medical video seminars, and referrals of high risk care.

In 2002, the company expanded training and health care education programs into Chile and Brazil, began a second opinion program in India, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, and increased export sales by 63 percent. PIM was responsible for attracting about 3,400 international patient encounters to Philadelphia area hospitals and physicians.

Members of the Philadelphia International Medicine include: The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Crozer-Keystone Health System, Fox Chase Cancer Center, Magee Rehabilitation Hospital, MossRehab, Pennsylvania Hospital, Temple University Hospital, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center.
