For Immediate Release:

Philadelphia - Philadelphia International Medicine (PIM) recently signed two additional agreements with key health care organizations that expand its presence in Brazil. PIM and Hospital Anchieta, Ltda., Brasilia, have signed an agreement to work together in the areas of clinical exchanges, physician exchanges, continuing medical education and other training opportunities. PIM also has signed a contract with Johnson & Johnson, Brazil for several continuing education workshops.

The "Health Gateway" agreement with Hospital Anchieta marks the second PIM bilateral hospital agreement in South America. PIM has similar Gateway agreements in the Middle East.

According to Andrew Wigglesworth, president and CEO of PIM, "The agreement with Hospital Anchieta establishes a framework through which the two organizations will share medical knowledge with an ultimate goal of improving the overall health of each community."

Through the Health Gateway, Philadelphia International Medicine and Hospital Anchieta (HAL) agree to develop programs in four areas: administrative training, continuing medical education, visiting physicians and patient referrals.

"This program is a means for the administrators and clinicians in Brasilia to work together with their counterparts in Philadelphia. By working together on common goals, we can foster information exchanges, advance quality care and identify emerging opportunities that can benefit the people of both communities," said Delcio Pereira Rodrigues, MD, director superintendent of HAL.

PIM, an organization of nine hospitals in the greater Philadelphia region, was formed in 1999 to establish Philadelphia as an international health care destination of choice. HAL is acknowledged as one of the leading hospitals in Brazil.

Over the next few months PIM and HAL will be discussing specific implementation targets. Some items discussed already are satellite education and special tele-clinics; second opinions and a direct patient referral program; a visit to Philadelphia by Anchieta administrators and an exchange of professional staff.

PIM also signed a contract with Johnson & Johnson Brazil calling for PIM faculty to conduct several workshops in Brazil. The workshops are geared to teach physicians and administrators in Brazil how health care organizations in the United States have established "centers of excellence." Participating in the workshops will be faculty from Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center and Temple University Hospital. The first workshop will be held in August, followed by other workshops in September.
