U.S. News & World Report Ranking Demonstrates PIM Hospitals are Among the Best in America

Philadelphia -- Demonstrating yet again that the hospitals of Philadelphia International Medicine (PIM) are among the best in the world, U.S. News & World Report in its annual best hospitals rankings provided additional evidence that the best quality medical and rehabilitation care is available through one telephone call to PIM.

"Philadelphia International Medicine hospitals placed extremely well in the U.S. News annual rankings, and we are very proud of the excellent medical care provided here," said Andrew Wigglesworth, president and CEO of PIM. "This is another indication that our hospitals provide patients with a combination of personal care, excellent outcomes, competitive prices and cutting-edge research."

In the rankings released today, PIM hospitals placed among the best in each of the 17 separate clinical areas. The University of Pennsylvania Medical Center (UPMC) again was listed as an overall Honor Roll winner, named as one of the best 15 hospitals in the United States. The University of Pennsylvania Medical Center placed on all but one adult category.

In pediatrics, UPMC has an affiliation with The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, which for the 12th consecutive year, was rated as the number two pediatric hospital in the United States. In many other rankings CHOP is rated the best pediatric hospital in the United States, and recently announced a $650 million capital program over the next five years to expand its patient care and research facilities. More than 500 clinical studies are currently underway at CHOP in fields ranging from fetal surgery to gene therapy. The hospital ranks second among pediatric academic research centers in funding from the National Institutes of Health, and its total research budget tops $70 million annually. Research is expected to double during the next five years.

Also making an especially strong showing overall was Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, which placed in seven of the categories - Cardiac care; digestive diseases; ear, nose and throat; rehabilitation; geriatrics; gynecology and urology.

While PIM hospitals scored in each of the specialty areas, PIM's showing in rehabilitation medicine was especially impressive. Three PIM members - Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, MossRehab Hospital, and the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center each placed among the nation's best in the rankings. Magee Rehabilitation Hospital, also a PIM member, is also regarded as a premier facility in the United States.

Three PIM hospitals - Temple University Hospital, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center -- also placed in the area of digestive diseases, demonstrating a very high level of quality care available from Philadelphia area hospitals.

Cancer care was another strong specialty area in which the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center placed ninth in the nation, with Fox Chase Cancer Center also making the list.

Other members of Philadelphia International Medicine that place among the nation's best in other rankings include Crozer Keystone Health System and Pennsylvania Hospital.
