Your Child. Our Promise.
Since our founding in 1940, the Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children has served thousands of children from across the country and around the world. The hospital is a division of Nemours, one of the nation’s largest pediatric health systems dedicated to achieving higher standards in children’s health. Nemours offers an integrated spectrum of clinical treatment coupled with research, advocacy, and educational health and prevention services extending to all families in the communities it serves.
Located just outside of Wilmington, Delaware, on 300 acres of parkland, the Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children offers a remarkably beautiful and tranquil setting in which to heal.
Originally founded as an orthopedic facility, we are now a 200-bed teaching hospital that offers all the specialties of pediatric medicine, surgery, and dentistry in a spacious, comfortable, and family-focused facility. Children from birth through age 17 with acute, chronic, and complex health problems benefit from the threefold mission established by our founders - excellence in patient care, education, and research.
The Hospital’s programs in orthopedics, neurosurgery, cardiology & cardiac surgery, cancer and bone marrow transplantation attract patients from across the nation and around the world. The duPont Hospital was recently ranked as a “Top 25 Best Children’s Hospital” in Parents magazine’s influential national survey.
Nemours provides the pediatric subspecialty physicians at duPont Hospital’s main campus, and at pediatric primary and specialty care locations throughout Delaware, southeastern Pennsylvania, and southern New Jersey. Together the Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children and Nemours are the academic partner of Thomas Jefferson University and the pediatric provider to the Jefferson Health System and its members and affiliates.
Nemours operating entities in Delaware and Florida manage nearly one million patient visits each year, while its research efforts are ranked 13th in the nation for National Institute of Health research funding among children’s hospitals.
By enhancing our renowned medical services through a holistic “whole child” approach to health, leading-edge research and teaching, Nemours is building a new model of care.
Whether performing a life saving transplant, bringing breakthrough research to the bedside, training the next generation of pediatric specialists or helping parents keep their children healthier through advocacy and prevention programs, Nemours is dedicated to achieving higher standards in children’s health.
Everything about the duPont Hospital – from the technology and equipment to the furniture and surroundings – is geared specifically toward children. In carrying out our mission, we work to respect the rights, values and dignity of patients and their families at all times. Foreign language interpreter services are available, while our pastoral care program is able to help provide spiritual and emotional care regardless of religion, faith or culture.
The duPont Hospital offers a wide variety of amenities to make your stay as convenient and comfortable as possible and a Ronald McDonald House is located adjacent to the hospital. The Ronald McDonald House of Delaware has 32,000 square feet of living space, a movie theater and 50 guestrooms -- each with a private bathroom.
